Homeowner: Hazel Logan |
Age: 77
Council
District: 5
House
location: Fairmount
Park
About the homeowner: Mrs. Logan moved into her
house when it was new in 1961. Her income no longer covers needed repairs for
the house. Her granddaughter helped her to fill out the application and many of
her grandchildren will lend a hand on event day. On her application Mrs. Logan
said, “As a senior citizen living on a fixed income, I can’t afford the repairs
needed. I have worked very hard all of my life to get the things I need, but
now that I’m up in age, Its hard to afford these repairs and to find someone
dependable who won’t take advantage of the elderly to come and do the repairs.”
Their greatest concern: Mrs. Logan would like to
have some windows fixed and to have a window shining under the house sealed.
She also has a leaking pipe in the kitchen.
What we found: A big problem in this house
is a leak in the roof near the furnace flue. It has soaked the insulation and
sheetrock below. On the outside of the house inspectors found loose stone
veneer, gaps at windows and loose siding. An entrance door to the crawlspace is
completely missing. A loose old staircase will be replaced.
On
the inside of the house, the house captain will replace some light fixtures and
replace the kitchen flooring. Minor plumbing problems will be repaired,
including the leaky kitchen faucet. The bathroom has loose tiles and a broken
soap dish and that area will be repaired. A chip in the tub will be sealed.

Her Comments on Christmas in
April: "I have always been far more enriched by the
volunteering experience than the homeowners assisted! Christmas in April
gives everyone, regardless of skill, an opportunity to help your fellow man
right here in your own neighborhood. It gives you an opportunity to be
awed by your fellow-volunteers, who come from all walks of life and have a
wealth of experience and talent. It truly helps you to experience the
real meaning of "Christmas", year round!
