Homeowner: Eugenia Bryant

Age: 75

Council District: 6

House location: Upper Marlboro

About the homeowner: Mrs. Bryant is retired from Prince George’s County Public Schools. She has lived in the same home for 45 years. A single parent, she has opened her home to her daughter Hilda and her sons because Hilda is recovering from a stroke. Her daughter Maria also lives in the home. Mrs. Bryant suffered a car accident in 1969 and was almost killed. She has only partial use of her hands and has one leg shorter than the other. Economics is the greatest hurdle she faces. Even with the combined income of all six occupants of the home, they still live below the poverty line. Our program helped Mrs. Bryant once before.

Their greatest concern: Windows on the home are old and in poor condition. Paint is needed inside and outside.

What we found: There are no smoke alarms in the crowded home. A tendency toward hoarding is evident in this house. Working here will be challenging if excess accumulation is not removed. Heating ducts in the basement are falling down. Three windows have broken glass. The bathroom needs drywall repair and anti-slip strips. The doors need weather stripping. The living room has loose paneling and cracked drywall along with some electrical repair. The porches need new flooring. Interior paint is needed.

House Captain: Edith Chatman

Her Volunteer Experience: A member of the Board of Directors, Edith Chatman has been a house captain for six years. She has also worked on the Golf Committee and has volunteered for numerous tasks assigned by our director.

Her Reaction to her Homeowner: The homeowner has a number of challenges. She is one of our elderly residents who lives with a disability as a result of an accident she had in 1969. Her oldest daughter, who lives with her, had a stroke in 2004 which left her handicapped as well. Also living with her are three grandsons and another daughter. The household income is under $20,000. The house was built in 1960 and it desperately needs to be repaired.
